Year 10:
The following topics are studied for examination in November
Biology 1a: The human body; menstrual cycle; drugs, disease and treatments.
Chemistry 1a: Products from rocks; The periodic table; metals from rocks, fractional distillation; crude oil.
Physics 1a: Energy and electricity: Heat transfer; efficiency of machines; energy transformation; energy resources
The following topics are studied for examination in March
Biology 1b: Evolution and environment: Populations and competition; genes chromosomes and DNA; the greenhouse effect and sustainable development.
Chemistry 1b: Oils, Earth and the atmosphere; Cracking crude oil; Using alkanes to make polymers; Food additives; plate tectonics.
Physics 1b: Radiation and the universe: electromagnetic waves; hazards of waves; radioactivity; the origin of the Universe and looking into space.
Following this students start year 11 work and complete coursework.
Year 11:
The following topics are studied for examination in June
Biology 2(i): Life processes; Life and cells; diffusion and osmosis; Energy transfer and decay; the carbon cycle.
Chemistry 2(i): Bonding and reactions; atoms isotopes and bonding; metals and bonding; relative formula mass and moles.
Physics 2(i): Forces and Motion; velocity and acceleration; the three laws of motion; stopping distances and momentum.
Biology 2(ii): Enzymes and homeostasis; Biological catalysts; the digestive system; kidneys and controlling blood sugar.
Chemistry 2(ii): Rates of reaction; collision theory; energy transfers and the Haber process.
Physics 2(ii): Electricity and the atom: static electricity; circuits; resistance; mains electricity; energy and power; radioactive decay process; nuclear fission and fusion.
Biology 2(iii): Genetics; Genetic variation; stem cells; genetic disorders and embryo screening.
Chemistry 2(iii): Using ions in solution: Acids and alkalis; oxides, hydroxides and ammonia; electrolysis.
