"Why Literacy is important?"
It is estimated that approximately 16% of adults in England are “functionally illiterate.” Those adults would not pass an English GCSE and their reading and writing skills are not what we would expect of an 11 year old student. For them, many areas of employment are not an option. Low levels of literacy impact

negatively on our life chances and that is why improving improving literacy levels at Allerton Grange is one of our key priorities. We want to work with parents to ensure that all of our students leave us as literate young men and women who are able to make a full contribution to society. I welcome this website as one of the strategies we will use to raise the profile of literacy development in our school and hope that parents have the confidence to contact us if they want support in helping their children become better readers, writers and communicators.
