  • Subject Information

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in human behaviour. Although you do not need to have studied psychology before you should be able to show an interest in the subject. Through studying it you will discover the answer to questions such as why do we fall in love, why do people forget, what is the best way to cope with stress and why do people obey. This is a fascinating course that requires concentration and application however it is not suitable as a subject for those wishing to solve personal problems.

  • Entry Requirements

Students should normally have passes at grade B in a range of GCSE subjects including Maths and/or English since the course is academically rigorous. You should be aware that you will be required to complete a large amount of homework and private study.

  • Course Outline 

Year 12 - AS

In year 12 you will study two modules. You will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the core areas of psychology (social, cognitive, developmental, biological and individual differences) through a range of topics. In addition you will study research methods.

You will take two exams each lasting 1½ hours.

Year 13 - A2

In year 13 you will study at least three options from the following: biological rhythms and sleep, perception, relationships, aggression, eating behaviour, gender, intelligence and learning, cognition and development

The last unit you will study involves different approaches in psychology, debates and research methods.

There will be two exams of 11/2 hours and 2 hours.

  • Future Prospects

Psychology is accepted as a suitable A level for a very wide range of degree courses including Medicine. It is a useful qualification for anyone who is intending to follow a career that involves close interaction with people in any setting.
