Allerton Grange

Our 6th Form

"INSPIRING SUCCESS"

The Allerton Grange School motto is more than just mere words - it encapsulates our entire philosophy of constantly searching for new ways of inspiring our students to achieve the very best they are capable of.

Students like Amarpreet, whose 11  A*s and 1 A at GCSE in 2007 set a new school record; students like Matt, a talented opera singer, actor and rock vocalist who also works tirelessly for the school's racial equality group; students like the Under-14 football team and the Junior Girls athletics team, who both won Leeds Schools trophies in 2007; students like Alex and Martha, who received Peace Awards from the Lord Mayor and travelled to the USA to meet Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama and other Nobel Laureates.

They are just some of the many young people who have benefited from the culture of success and encouragement which flourishes at this dynamic, multi-cultural, multi-talented school.

Academic Success
The teaching at Allerton Grange is among the best in the whole of Britain, according to the latest ALPS (A-Level Performance System) figures, which place the school in the top 10% in the entire country for the quality of teaching, a finding which is backed up by record exam results this year. Being a large school - over 1700 students and more than 200 staff - we are able to offer a wide variety of courses and adapt the curriculum to meet individual needs. Since curriculum changes were introduced in 2005, the number of students gaining A*s at GCSE has trebled, the number gaining As has doubled and there has been a 66% increase in students achieving the Gold Standard of 5 A*-Cs including Maths and English. A-level results in 2007 were also outstanding, showing the greatest improvement from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5 in the school's history. Students have also benefited from our innovative new Positive Behaviour Strategy, which encourages and rewards good behaviour, and imposes automatic sanctions on inappropriate behaviour.

Artistic Success
Allerton Grange is noted throughout the city and beyond for the high quality of its visual and performing arts, having produced many talented actors, musicians and artists, including Damien Hirst and Marcus Harvey. And in 2007 the school's excellence in these areas was acknowledged by the Arts Council, who granted us their highest honour - Artsmark Gold status - an award which coincided with the world premiere of Bollyrock, a musical drama devised and written by the students themselves.

Sporting Success
The school also has a strong sporting tradition, with students representing not just their school, but also their city and their county. Some compete at national level in sports as diverse as badminton, judo and gymnastics - and former pupil Kiran Matharu is making a name for herself internationally as one of the country's finest female golfers.

An International Outlook
Being a multi-cultural school brings us many benefits - not least a strong international outlook. Allerton Grange has links with Pakistan, Germany, Spain and Japan; and following a visit by the Bulgarian Ambassador in 2007, we are now exploring links with Bulgaria, as well. Other recent visitors to the school have included parties from Israel, Japan, China and Norway.

A School For the Future
Allerton Grange already enjoyed excellent facilities, especially in the North Leeds City Learning Centre, which is on the school site - but in 2009,  we  moved to a new state-of-the-art building, the facilities are truly second to none. But one thing won't change - our commitment to giving young people the best possible education and aspirations, and inspiring them to achieve success in whatever they choose to do.
