Assessment
There is only one tier of Assessment and students may receive 1 Grade from A* to G.
Students are assessed in three ways
40% of the total marks
100 marks
6-8 compulsory questions with a combination of short answer, structured and free response questions. Some questions will include stimulus material.

Written Paper (Unit 1)
This examination will be taken in June at the end of the two year course.
Research Task (Unit 2) Controlled Assessment
20% of the total marks
30 marks
The Research Task must be completed under supervision within the classroom and should occupy approximately 7 hours of supervised time.
This task will be set during the half term between Easter and May Spring Bank half term. ( Students will have had the opportunity to practice an assignment earlier in the year, to prepare them for this).
Child Study (Unit 3)
40% of the total marks
60 marks
The Child Study must be completed under supervision within the classroom and should occupy approximately 20 hours of supervised time.
This task will be started at the end of the summer term in year 10. Students will have previously organised with the parent of a child under 5 to observe and study their child's development over at least 4 months.
Progression
The specification will lay a basis for students wishing to progress to study Advanced Level GCE in Psychology , Sociology or Health and Social Care.
Vocational progression may also be achieved through study at an appropriate level of one of the following:
- NVQs in Early Years Care and Education (Levels 2/3);
- Caring for Children and Young People (Level 3 only); Playwork (Levels 2/3).
- Cache Diploma in Childcare and Education (NNEB); BTEC National
- Diploma in Early Years (Level 3).
Career opportunities include – nursing, health visitor, midwifery, child care, social work, paediatrics, child psychology and other related vocations.
