- Why choose History?
History is traditionally one of the major academic subjects in the curriculum and there are good reasons for it being so. It is a subject that enables students to enquire into the past and to acquire the necessary background knowledge in order to understand their present environment and the current affairs happening around them. History is not, as many people erroneously think, only about the past but rather has as its main aim to clarify our understanding of the present.
The study of History also helps to develop useful transferable skills. History is the communication subject par excellence. Students learn to collect, collate and analyse information, make notes and recognise and evaluate critically a variety of interpretations. They learn to formulate their own judgments with confidence and communicate their conclusions in written and oral presentations. These skills of course are as relevant in the boardroom as the classroom. Not surprisingly a high proportion of the people in top management jobs throughout industry, commerce, government and administration, as well as in the professions have qualified in History or a closely related subject.
Opting for history in Year 9
Towards the end of Year 9 pupils face one of the most important decisions of their career - which of the optional choices to study at GCSE. The History GCSE is one based around the modern world, and includes the following:
Paper 1: Britain during World War One
International Relations 1919-1963
Paper 2: Germany 1919-1939
USA 1919-1941
Coursework: Evacuation during World War Two
Vietnam
The course involves the completion of two papers taken at the end of year 11 and two coursework essays. There is also an optional trip to the battlefields of Belgium for those who are really interested.
