Our department believes that Physical Education is a subject which can include and inspire anyone, regardless of ability. Our curriculum aims to motivate and facilitate the pursuit of a healthy and active lifestyle through the provision of numerous opportunities and activities that can be accessed both during curricular and extra-curricular time. As a department, we recognise that strengths in Physical Education may lie in areas such as coaching, leadership and officiating as opposed to just physical performance, therefore students are able to experience these roles in all avenues of the subject. Pupils in Key Stage 3 have two lessons of Physical Education a week. We currently work on a modular activity rotation basis but plan to change to rotating after one and a half modules when we start teaching in our ‘new build' This will hopefully allow greater coverage of content within each activity and more opportunity to experience, reinforce and consolidate skills in both practice and competitive situations.

Pupils in Key Stage 3 are taught in same gender groups until they reach Key Stage 4. In Year 7 they are mixed ability, until Easter when groups are set by ability. This ability setting continues in Year 8 and 9, with groups being reviewed at regular intervals. With the new National Curriculum we will still expect all staff to teach a vast range of physical activities and sports but would welcome expertise in alternative activities that could be offered to further engage pupils in Physical Education.
