ALLERTON GRANGE Hair Salon Opens....

Inspiring today’s students to become tomorrows professional hairstylists”
Parent Governor Mr Asghar Ali officially opened the Allerton Grange Hair Salon to a packed clientele on Friday 14th October. chAnGeS @ Allerton Grange has been created for the 2 year Hair & Beauty course which is taught in the school by former Hairdresser Miss Pam Riley and assessor Mrs Nicola Kitchen from Wetherby High School Hair Salon. The students can now participate in all aspects of working in a ‘real’ salon by working on the reception, shampooing clients, blow waving and straightening hair and progressing to a higher level of hairdressing as they proceed through the course. chAnGeS Hair Salon is also delighted to have created links with Leeds Premier Salon Group, Cutting Room Creatives at both of their salons, Chapel Allerton and the city centre, who’s owners and team will kindly demonstrate to the students how to create some fantastic professional designs along with some of the finer skills of hairdressing.

This Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing Services will develop their practical skills in: the creative art of dressing hair, how to create a hair & beauty image, effectively shampooing and conditioning hair and how to provide a good consultation for clients. To further enhance their practical skills they will have the opportunity to choose from practical units such as: how to provide effective scalp massage, the display of salon retail stock, to work on the salon reception, the art of plaiting and twisting hair and how to colour hair using temporary and semi permanent colour.
Underpinning this qualification they will develop a sound knowledge of Health & Safety and what it is like to work in the hairdressing industry. They will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification.
The purpose of this qualification is to develop their skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable them to perform their own services and assist others.
Once they have completed this qualification they will have the opportunity to progress to further NVQ qualifications (which includes cutting and application of permanent hair products) and vocationally related qualifications. It may also lead directly to supervised employment in a salon where it can also provide a good platform for working as a modern apprentice.
The professional teaching team will teach them how to apply perm rollers, tints and highlights using non-permanent products. The Beautician teaching will take place in year 2 of the course.
All aspects of the course will be assessed by the internal verifier to meet VTCT and regulatory requirements. An external verifier, appointed by the VTCT will visit the salon to sample and quality-check the assessments.
This course for 2011-12 is now full but current year 9 students at Allerton Grange can select Hair & Beauty as one of their options in January 2012. Next year’s course will start on 25th June 2012.
